The Folio Society has released a press release announcing it’s newest edition of A New Birth of Freedom: Selected Writings of Abraham Lincoln, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination.

FS Limited Edition of The Duke’s Children to be published 2015 @foliosociety #Trollope

Now this is the kind of exciting news I’ve been waiting to hear. ‘First Complete Edition’ of Trollope’s The Duke’s Children. This will be no brainer. I will have to get this. Just need to know the price.

To accompany the first complete edition of The Duke’s Children, we have commissioned essays from those closely involved in the restoration project; these are printed in a separate commentary volume. The essays consist of:

• An introduction by Steven Amarnick, telling the whole story of the book and its restoration, and illuminating the effect of the restored passages on our understanding of the book.
• A detailed listing of the principal cuts by Robert F. Wiseman, with observations on the different types of cuts employed by Trollope and their significance.
  An essay by Susan Lowell Humphreys on the manuscript itself, and what it tells us about Trollope’s working methods.

The Folio Society publishes 23 new titles for 2012/2013

he Folio Society has just updated their website for the new membership year: Prospectus 2012-2013. They are going to publish 23 new amazing titles in August 2012 and November 2012; following the in the same publishing schedule as last year, I suspect that we will see additional new publications in December and January 2013.

I’m really happy to see Fermat’s Last Theorem being published. It’s one of the titles that Society sent out in a survey that they might publish requesting members for some feedback. I believe these surveys are an excellent idea and recommend the FS to continue sending these to its members. It’s also a great way of seeing what’s coming up. Fermat’s Last Theorem is definitely one of my favourite books. I remember reading it for pleasure in my university days and it changed my life. I began to see life differently since then and highly recommend this book to anyone, interested in Mathematics or not; it can be read by anyone without a foundation Mathematics. I haven’t had a chance to read his other book The Code Book, although it’s on my wish list.

The Folio Society—This year’s calendar is illustrated with a range of drawings from favourite Folio editions featuring animals. January shows a pastoral scene by Jonathan Gibbs from the Selected Poems of Robert Frost, July a drawing by Bob Venables of ‘Jesper who Herded the Hares’ from The Violet Fairy Book, and December a charming yuletide image by Charles van Sandwyck from The Wind in the Willows. This fine art calendar, with a line per day, measures 13½” × 5½”.

Some interesting things from the Folio Society [updated]

These are good times to be a member of The Folio Society. I am quite happy that the Production Director on the Limited Editions Programme, Mr Joe Whitlock Blundell has started a blog discussing future limited editions and their progress as well as some other interesting info on FS’ horizon.

If you follow the blog, you’ll read about many unannounced future Limited Editions (LE) due to be published—one of them recently announced and one of my favourite titles that was discussed at the blog was Gulliver’s Travels LE. One that I am really really really looking forward to is the new facsimile of South Polar Times LE due to be published next year 2012 coinciding with the centenary exhibition of Captain Scott’s Last Expedition at the National History Museum from 20 January – 2 September 2012. I’ll have to get time to be in London to see this exhibition. It’s published by the Society in collaboration with the Royal Geographical Society, the British Library and the Scott Polar Research Institute to honour the centenary of the death of Captain Scott and his companion. It will be limited to 1000 copies, although this is unconfirmed. No word on price, yet. I especially like, the in-house magazine solander box of Captain Scott’s Antarctic expeditions.

The FS has also published The Journals of Captain R.F. Scott as Scott’s Last Expedition, one that has been on my wish list for a while, available for £42.95 here.

Dickens 2012

Next year, marks the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth–February 7th, 1812, and we’re joining in for the fun to celebrate ye olde Dickens’ 200th birthday. There is a website up marking the celebration: Dickens 2012, which explains that:

Dickens 2012 is an international celebration of the life and work of Charles Dickens which will take place to mark the bicentenary of his birth, which falls on 7 February 2012. A number of international institutions and organisations are partners of Dickens 2012 who work together to deliver a programme of events and activities to commemorate this very special anniversary

Numerous events are planned world-wide and can be seen under the “Events” page. Make sure to check out the Charles Dickens Museum. Oh and do remember to read his novels!

On another yet similar note, The Folio Society are also commemorating Dickens’ bicentenary of his birth and have recently published a selection of new editions of his works, based on the celebrated 1930s Nonesuch editions and featuring original illustrations by artists including Dickens’s long-term collaborator ‘Phiz’. Each volume includes an introduction specially commissioned from an esteemed writer, such as A. N. Wilson and Peter Ackroyd.

They also feature individual new binding designs all quarter-bound in buckram, with a quote from the novel blocked in gold on the front. These are large books at 10″ × 6½” (25,4 cm x 16,5 cm). The text is based on their earlier Folio Society Nonesuch editions (which are based on the famous 1930s Nonesuch Press editions), that were published some years earlier.

The Folio Society publishes Gulliver’s Travels LE

A new limited edition—Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift.

The Folio Society—Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts, purports to be the account of a voyage by a surgeon and captain, Lemuel Gulliver. In fact, this biting satire on contemporary society was the work of the Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift (1667–1745). A friend of the poet Alexander Pope and a member of the Scriblerus Club, which lampooned bad literature and scholarship, Swift was acknowledged as the greatest satirist of his age. He was the scourge of corrupt politicians and has been an inspiration for other writers from Voltaire to the present day.

• Printed on Cordier Wove paper.
• Hand-printed etching, signed and numbered by the artist, and tipped onto a special limitation spread.

Original etching, printed by hand, signed and numbered by the artist.

Limited to just 1,000 copies, this publication from The Folio Society joins a series of newly illustrated collector’s editions of classic works. Peter Suart has created an extraordinary sequence of colour images, as well as numerous tailpieces. Each colour plate is tipped by hand onto a page printed with a golden border. The details of the edition are printed letterpress on the verso of a special limitation spread, and a hand-printed etching, signed and numbered by the artist, is tipped on the recto page. Each book is quarter-bound in vellum with vellum tips, and the spine is hand-blocked in 22-carat gold. The binding design, also by the artist, is blocked in three colours and gold foil.
